Although "production" and "mixing" are two separate things, today's musical processes and technologies give mixing such a creative potential that, sound designing has become a key factor in most songs of our time. The production (to not mix with the recorded elements of a song), is the process of giving music it's proper musical elements to build an emotional structure and experience. While the mixing can also do that with sound design, it is originally meant to "correct" or "tweak" the recorded elements into making them sound "imperfectly perfect" together. Note that sound design nowadays is not only controlling quality or creativity of a sound element, it is now used as "instrument" to create completely new unexpected universes of sound libraries for your music.
